The Student Advice in Higher Education Conference 2024 will explore the latest solutions in delivering high impact advice, support and guidance services that meet the evolving needs of students.

Participants will explore how high-quality student advice can advance student success, the next steps in tackling barriers to engagement and what the future of a successful embedded service looks like.

The Conference will also offer implementation-led deep-dives on key challenges facing student advisors including on financial guidance, supporting international students adjusting to life in the UK and managing conversations on non-continuation.

Embedding High Quality Student Support into a Student Success Roadmap - The Life Design Concept at the University of Birmingham

 

Utilising the design thinking principles of Stanford University’s Life Design Lab to empower students to actively craft their futures and their success measures. This session will explore:

  • Success for whom – institutional KPIs Vs. students’ personal lives

  • Questioning traditional approaches that prescribe formulas and measures for success

  • Encouraging students to explore their passions, idealise their desired outcomes, and strategize actionable plans to achieve them

  • Formulating a more personalised and holistic approach to student advice

  • Moving beyond narrowly defined metrics to encompass well-being, purpose, and fulfilment

  • Equipping students with the skills and agency to navigate their academic journeys and transition beyond university life

Building on innovation and ideas from the ASK@WOL service at the University of Wolverhampton, this session will take a deep dive into developing a cohesive customer-service model on student advice and support. The session will consider:

  • Supporting flawless access and joining up fragmented advice centres

  • Coordinating a consistent service across multiple touchpoints to reflect student demand

  • Developing an ‘any question’ approach across the student lifecycle

  • Managing an efficient service that support timely, useful information

  • Embedding compassion and kindness into service standards

  • What it takes to implement a truly whole-institution approach to advice and support
