Leading with Empathy: The Power of Compassionate Leadership

Wednesday 7 August 2024, 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Guest Speaker

Nicola Mardsen
Head of Student Recruitment and Access Development
Sheffield Hallam University

Nicola has over 20 years in higher education leadership and management roles across several universities and, as a first-generation student from a widening participation background who attended a Russell Group university, she is a passionate advocate of the transformational impact of higher education for individuals. Her career, in the main, has been dedicated to fostering access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds, driving inclusive recruitment strategies that make higher education accessible to all. Other roles have included faculty support, admissions, partnerships, and product marketing. Her passion is bringing people together and fostering strong collaborative networks. She has recently formed a growing ‘support group’ for others in similar levels of roles within recruitment, has held the role of HELOA Group Chair for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside – a group of recruitment and access professionals, and is Co-Chair of a school local governing body.

Collaboration, kindness and compassion are fundamental aspects of Nicola’s approach to leadership. She has a keen focus on supporting and empowering teams and strives to develop inclusive and supportive cultures to ensure the best results for the organisation and stakeholders. When every team member is part of an environment where they can succeed and thrive, everyone benefits.

Leading with Empathy: The Power of Compassionate Leadership

What to Expect

In practicing compassionate leadership, leaders and managers encourage open communication, actively listen to their team members, and respond to their needs with kindness, which fosters a positive and inclusive work environment where employees feel valued and heard. This approach not only enhances employee well-being and satisfaction but also drives higher levels of engagement, creativity, and productivity.

In this short session, we’ll explore the key components of compassionate leadership and I’ll give you some of my personal insights and examples of how I’ve tried to embed this into my leadership roles and the impact I feel this has had to see if there are practical things you may be able to implement into your leadership practice. As with any practice, there can be downsides, so we’ll touch a little on these and how to mitigate against them and set up both you, and your teams, for success.
